The Department for Education (DfE) has this week published its first gender pay gap report in advance of the April 2018 deadline. The report reveals a relatively small median gender pay gap of 5.9% and a mean gender pay gap of 5.3%. These figures look relatively good compared with the national gap of 18.1%.

The DfE report sits alongside 18 other reports on the government’s portal including a report from PriceWaterHouseCooper LLP which revealed a much more worrying if not unsurprising gap of 34.4%. It is interesting to see that organisations with greater pay gaps like PriceWaterhouseCooper are the ones taking advantage of the option to produce a narrative to accompany their report. As previously reported, we are advising all employers to include some explanatory notes with the reports to help set the figures in to context and to outline the steps they are taking to close the gap.
